The Biggest Diamond in the World

Perhaps you have wondered what the biggest diamond in the world is.

Read this article and find out what the biggest (gem quality) rough diamond is, as well as the biggest faceted diamond ever cut.

The Biggest Diamond in the World

The Cullinan diamond is the biggest gem-quality rough diamond that was ever found. It weighed an astonishing 3106.75 carat or just over 0.6kg! It was found on January 26 in 1905 and was named after the owner of the diamond mine.Biggest Diamond in the World

While the stone had an estimated clarity of D or E (D being the best color grade there is), there was a weak spot in the middle that made it necessary for the rough diamond to be cut in multiple pieces. The stone was bought by the Transvaal government who gifted it to King Edward VII on his 66th birthday.

Eventually a total of 9 large diamonds were cut from the stone in different shapes and carats. As well as some smaller diamonds from pieces that were left over after the main cuts had been made.

The names are fairly simple, they are named Cullinan I to Cullinan IX, with I having the highest carat and IX the lowest. The Cullinan I, which is also named the ‘Great Star of Africa’, has a weight of 530.4 carats and was the largest polished diamond in the world for decades. Until 1985 when the Golden Jubilee Diamond was found in the same mine.

The Cullinan II, also known as the Lesser Star of Africa, still weighs in at an impressive 317.4 carats. Both the Cullinan I and II are an important part of the British Crown Jewels.

Rumor has it that this already massive rough diamond was actually only the smaller half of the full crystal. It’s quite possible that the other half is still out there, though perhaps not even remotely near where the Cullinan was found.

To see just how immense 3106.75 carats is you can check out this video of a 478 carats rough diamond found in South Africa in 2008 and imagine finding a diamond that is more than six times larger!

The Biggest Faceted Diamond in the World

The largest diamond in the world is the Golden Jubilee diamond that weighs 545.67 carats. It was found in the same Premier mine in South Africa as the Cullinan diamond. Several other of world’s biggest diamonds, such as the Centenary, were found there as well in later years.

While certainly a very big diamond it was considered fairly ugly and was used as a way to test on how the Centenary that was found in 1986 should be cut. Surprisingly the result was the world’s largest diamond being 15.37 carats larger than the Cullinan I.

Because of its fancy yellow-brown color it is far from the most expensive diamond. Reportedly the estimated value is only between $4-12 million, though many believe that vastly underestimates the price for which it will sell if it is ever sold on the open market.

A 3600 carat carbonado, better known as a black diamond, was found in Brazil however the quality of the rough diamond was so low that not a single gemstone could be made from it. Unfortunately not much else is known about this massive diamond.
